From North of the Boulevard~
What’s behind the door? Sometimes, it’s good to just shut the door and forget about what’s inside. That only works for so long though and then it’s time to do something about what’s behind that closed door! One of my early goals for this year is to reorganize my home office/craft storage room. So, I’ve taken the plunge.
My home office also serves as my crafting storage room. Over the last couple of months as I was neck deep into making Christmas crafts, I realized how completely dysfunctional it is. Boxes are stuffed inside the closet with no organization. It’s my goal to give this room a much needed organizational make over. This isn’t a project that will be done in a day. This is going to take some time. I’ve been looking around the room wondering just where to begin.
In the room, I have too much furniture. but each piece serves a particular purpose, so I think I’m going to need to keep each piece. I have a very large desk that has my desk top computer and drawers and shelves full of stuff. It’s that stuff that needs to be organized. I’m showing the “Before” partly to make sure I stay motivated to make the changes!
I also have another desk that my printer sits on, along with my in/out mail, bills, etc. There isn’t too much I’ll need to do it, except to get rid of the storage boxes underneath it and find a different spot for those crafting items spilling onto it. The little white plastic bin is filled with crafting items. It needs to go into the closet.
There is also wooden file cabinet that must stay. It houses tons of paperwork.
There is a TV cabinet that I know could be put to better use. It holds a small TV, but I cannot remember the last time I had that tv turned on. I’m going to relocate the TV to a guest room and use the cabinet for craft storage. That should help with my closet mess a little bit.
And then, there is the closet. It’s a double closet and it holds a lot. My problem with it is that it is not organized in any way and there are boxes in there that have old paper work that my husband has a very hard time parting with. I wonder if he’ll notice if it’s gone! There is a lot of junk in there, too. An old VHS player, a gooseneck lamp, a small easel are just a few of the items that need to find a new home. I need to buy some plastic bins in varying sizes to help with this. I also need to sort and save/trash/donate.
What a Mess!
Over the weekend, I made a list of everything I want to do with the room. This helps me get a handle on exactly where to start. Planning ahead works well. Deciding just what I want each piece of furniture to be used for and what I can rearrange is a good starting point for me.
Once the list was completed, I decided that the easiest way to begin the project was to start with a clean slate. That meant relocating the television and pulling everything out of the closet.
The TV cabinet is now empty. I’ve gained a lot of storage space just from doing this.
The process of emptying the closet took a while. Wow, there was a bunch of stuff in there! Now that it’s empty, I can begin the process of sorting/discarding/donating.
Step Two begins tomorrow.
